Using Mace for Self-defense

Mace is a registered brand name of a non-lethal self-defense spray, manufactured by Mace Security International.

Mace, Inc. makes three different formulas of self-defense spray: Triple Action, PepperGard or Pepper Mace, and Pepper Foam. All sprays are meant to be directed into the face of an assailant.

The word "mace" is often used interchangeably with "pepper spray." Mace Inc.'s Triple Action product combines pepper spray, tear gas and ultraviolet dye for an all-out assault on any would-be attacker. The pepper spray is made from hot cayenne peppers, the active ingredient being oleoresin capsicum. Pepper spray is an inflammatory agent that causes temporary blindness and difficulty breathing, which can last up to 90 minutes. Tear gas is an irritant that induces coughing, while the dye stains the attacker for later identification.

Although Mace is a brand name, many other companies make a pepper spray or sprayable tear gas designed for self-defense.

Mace has six physiological effects that your attacker may experience:

* Central nervous system: headache, dizziness, and extreme general discomfort

* Chest: tight feeling in upper respiratory system, coughing

* Eyes: tearing and burning

* Mouth: accelerated secretion of saliva

* Nose: discharge, burning, irritation

* Skin: burning and stinging feeling on surface nerve endings on the face

If you plan to use Mace or pepper spray for self-defense, be prepared to use it. Have the canister out and in your hand, with your finger on the trigger.

Be aware that Mace does not paralyze. Your attacker may still be able to walk, run, or try to grab you. Once you've sprayed your assailant, get out of the area immediately Run in the opposite direction of your attacker if possible.

When you are safe, tell your local law enforcement agency about the attack. This is very important because it may help police apprehend the attacker, and prevent attacks on others.

The use of tear gas or a tear gas weapon, except in self-defense, can be a felony. You can get up to three years in state prison or up to one year in county jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

Investigate before you buy.

The Ultimate Self Defense Moves Are Basic

There are a great many myths out there regarding the subject of self defense. Among those myths, we see a range of poor advice that really misleads people. Such advice can include everything from the notion you need to be an ultimate fighter to defend yourself or the belief you need to develop mystical ancient prowess or the ill advised advice you should carry deadly weapons with you at all times. Again, these myths are just that - myths. While it certainly does not hurt to have a lot of training in a variety of spears of martial arts, self defense is often best served by learning a few high percentage basic self defense moves.

Such personal protection self defense moves are not flashy or spectacular. Rather, they are simple, straight forward, and to the point. Most importantly, they need to be applied by anyone regardless of age, height, or weight against a much more aggressive and larger opponent. Can this be done? Not only can it be done, it has been done.

One of the most stirring accounts that points out this fact is found in the tale of an 8 year old boy who successfully protected his 4 year old sister from being abducted. In May of 2010, a man attempted to abduct Josie Kuhns, while the family was on vacation. Her older brother, Nathan, (Again, "older" in this scenario is 8 years old) came to her rescue. As an unidentified man tried to pull her into his car, Nathan ran up to the man and started kicking and scratching him. Stunned at the response, the abductor let go of Josie and drove off in his car.

The only personal protection techniques Nathan used to defend his sister were kicking, scratching, and taking the fight to the assailant. Again, basic self defense moves are often the key to extricating yourself from a serious situation.

This incident also explains a few very important facts about self defense: predators prey on those that are weaker, predators do not want to get caught, and simple basic self defense moves can cause an attacker to flee. Again, an 8 year old child stopped a predator by simply scratching and kicking at him.

Now, no one is making the suggestion that it is easy to diffuse a serious predatory attack. Such incidents are extremely dangerous and stressful. However, in order to provide a successful and appropriate response, you will need a few basic self defense moves that can offer adequate protection when things get rough.

The basic self defense moves are not complicated or flashy. They are moves designed to work well under stress and pulled off in a simple and effective manner. The common self defense techniques that are highly effective would be a series of open hand attacks. Slapping, palm hand strikes, scratching, and eye pokes are fairly easy to perform. They are simple and direct and place you at very little risk for breaking or injuring your hand. (Closed fist strikes lead to broken hands due to the compression of the knuckles when the hand is not wrapped and placed in a glove) For those looking to knock out an opponent, the 'heavy tools' of knees, elbows, and head butts can be brutal tools that can deliver overwhelming force. (Please note: only use the appropriate level of force to handle a specific situation. Excess force that exceeds self defense can be considered assault) While these tools require a little additional training to make effective, the amount of time required to make them effective is not long as you would initially be led to believe.

This is not to say you never have to practice the material. A few short practice sessions a week would certainly aid in boosting skills in the delivery of the basic self defense moves. You do want to develop some proficiency in the delivery of the moves in a practice session. This way, you can be more confident that you can provide an effective response if a serious situation develops.

Realizing the difficulty in teaching karate as a form of self-defense, Bill began to apply practical skills that were easy to learn when confronted with physical encounters. Bill and his sister Becky, a physical educator, felt that an easier self defense class was needed to learn. They decided to combine their experiences to craft a program that would be both practical and effective.l Permission is granted to reprint & repost this article provided the resource box and all links remain intact.

Why Use Non-Lethal, Self Defense Products?

People's response to this question is usually the first obvious one; you don't kill your attacker. This is correct, but there is an even more important reason to use non-lethal, self defense products. This reason is not thought of as often but it is the most important of the reasons for me.

When a criminal attacks a person, most of the time, that person is not carrying a self defense weapon. But sometimes a potential victim does carry an item he or she uses to protect themselves and attempts to use it in self defense. Sometimes, potential victims that are armed with a self defense weapon or product, are overtaken by the attacker's strength and have their weapon taken away from them. This can obviously be a dangerous situation and one that you obviously want to avoid. But, it does happen and this is where having a non-lethal, self defense product becomes a better choice. More often than not, attackers will use your weapon against you. I'm sure you know the ending of this explanation... If you carry your non-lethal, self defense product such as a Taser and it is turned against you, you will NOT be killed. If you had a lethal weapon, such as a gun, in your possession, then you have a chance of being killed by your own weapon and it will probably only have your fingerprints on it.

There are other advantages to using non-lethal, self defense products:

The accidental discharge of the product or weapon by an innocent person or a child or by your own carelessness. Again, this is where it is important that the product you carry be non-lethal.

Another good reason to carry a non-lethal product is that if you unlawfully or carelessly use it on someone, the legal consequences aren't as harsh as if you would have killed someone!

You don't need a special permit to carry a non-lethal, self defense product. Firearms require you to get a conceal carry permit.

And last but not least, non-lethal, self defense products are usually cheaper than fire arms.

I don't know about you, but non-lethal, self defense products get my vote, hands down!

The Self Defense of a Mother Dog

Have you ever seen the way a mother dog guards and defends her pups? She is very territorial and intense when others are around. This is a natural instinct that many animals in the animal kingdom have, even humans. As a mother, it is their job to protect their young and let everyone around them know that they are the protectors.

If you've ever seen a mother animal with her newborn offspring you also know that if you do not stay within the boundaries the mother has set, there will be consequences. She will becoming more aggressive, a growl or bark may escape her. And if you continue to push her buttons, she may even bite or maul you. It's something to be very careful of.

It's very similar with people too. Since the beginning of time, we have in some shape or form, defended ourselves. We have defended our land, families, children, and belongings. In some situations, unfortunately it has been the case of 'kill or be killed.' An unfortunate circumstance, but the way of one trying to defend themselves nonetheless.

We still look towards self-defense when we feel threatened. When child is bullied and they feel threatened, they may look towards using some method of self-defense to get out of the situation. It is our natural instinct to know how to protect and defend, regardless if you're an animal or human, or young or old. Self-defense is important.

There are various types of self-defense. There are various classes, workshops, and certifications you can get in the art of self-defense tactics. There are even weapons available to make you feel safe and secure, and that are also discreet.

These are designed not just for men, but for women as well. It is important that both genders feel safe and secure.

Keep in mind that if you use common sense when entering situations and scenarios, the need for self-defense will be significantly less (if at all). Keep a good head on your shoulders, so you don't find yourself in a mess. If you do this, you should not find yourself in a situation that requires self-defense tactics.

Which Personal Self Defense Weapon Works the Best

Pepper sprays, stun guns, kubotans, they all work well for preventing an assault, but does one self-defense weapon really work any better than another? There is no short answer to this question. Each personal defense weapon has advantages as well as disadvantages. I've already written a number of articles on how some of these weapons work, so this time I'll just attempt to give you a brief description of the pros and cons of some of the more popular self-defense weapons, and then only you can decide which one works best for you.

Pepper spray

Pepper spray is an excellent self-defense weapon but it does have limitations. The chemical heat generated from defensive sprays works extremely well at stopping an attacker in their tracks. Pepper spray causes an almost instantaneous inflammation of the mucus membranes in the eyes, nose, throat and lungs of your attacker, causing them a great deal of pain as well as the inability to open their eyes or catch their breath, thus allowing you to get away.

The average pepper spray on the market today has a range of anywhere from 8 feet up to 20 feet allowing you to use the device from considerable distance away from your would be attacker. The limitations of pepper spray are that your attacker must be hit in or around the area of their face for it to be effective.

Unfortunately, wind conditions can have an effect on the direction of the spray. Also many assaults happen from behind or by surprise, making it difficult to take aim with a defensive spray. On the other hand, if you have your pepper spray ready and are alert enough to your surrounding to avoid being surprised, then pepper spray is possibly the most effective non lethal defense weapon you can have.

Stun Guns

Stun guns are another excellent self-defense weapon. They use electrical voltage to disrupt the muscle functions of your attacker. The voltage produced by a stun gun causes some pain but more importantly, they interfere with the neurological impulses from the brain to the muscles rendering your attacker unable to control their muscle function. The down side to a stun device is that the electrodes must come into contact with your target. That means that your attacker has to be right in your face before you can use the weapon against them.

On the plus side, stun guns are effective almost anywhere on the body, so if you are attacked from behind or surprised, you don't need to take aim as you would with the defensive sprays. Just reach around and jam the weapon into your attackers body, then push the button.

Kubotans

Kubotans are possibly the most popular of all personal self-defense weapons. One reason is that the kubotan is a highly effective pressure point weapon that is considered non lethal and legal almost everywhere. (I say almost everywhere because even though I don't know of anywhere that they're not legal, I also don't know every law in every city in the country. I will however say this, if they are illegal somewhere, that law needs to be changed).

Another reason kubotans are so popular is that they are extremely easy to carry. While there are a number of different styles of kubotans, the average one is little more than a stick that's about 5 ½ inches long and about ½ inch in diameter. They can be easily carried in your pocket and most of the kubotans today have a key ring attached to them, which makes them readily available whenever you are carrying your keys with you.

Knives

Knives are rarely used for self-defense purposes. While they can make an excellent self-defense weapon, few people are truly prepared to cut or stab another person. There's something about slashing another human being that would make most people all too aware of just how soft and fragile their own bodies are. I have personally spent some time learning knife-fighting techniques, but it's still not my weapon of choice.

Handguns

The final weapons that I'll talk about today are handguns. What can be said about a gun that hasn't already been said? Handguns are possibly the ultimate self-defense weapons. Even someone with minimal intelligence is likely to stop whatever they're doing when they find themselves looking down the barrel of a loaded gun. The only downside to guns is that almost anyone can pull the trigger of a gun and kill another person. Even a small child can accidentally shoot and kill someone with a handgun. A number of people are accidentally killed every year by someone who didn't know how to properly use a gun. This can make guns very dangerous in the wrong hands.

I am personally a strong advocate for the right to bear arms, but I am just as strongly opposed to anyone handling a firearm without the proper training.

That's about it for today folks. I could go on and on about self-defense weapons, but this article is already getting a bit lengthy. I'll go into more detail with some of my future articles, but for now, I hope that I've given you enough brain food to cause you to want to do some of your own research on self-defense weapons.

Real Self Defense Training - Knowing What is and What is Not Self Defense is the First Step!

Learning how to defend yourself is not as easy as many peddlers of self defense books, martial arts videos, and self defense training programs would have you believe. The truth is that, self defense training and the ability to be able to defend yourself against a real-world, violent attacker, is a complex and deep subject.

It doesn't help when there is a ton of information and sales pitches, both online and off, about this or that self defense product that will teach you how to defend yourself in nano-seconds! I understand the confusion because I literally spent boat-loads of money on so-called self defense products that turned out to be books, videos, and courses on "how to fight."

The problem for people like us though is...

We don't want to be fighters. In fact, I detest violence! But...

I refuse to become the victim of someone's sick, twisted needs, desires, or lack of control! How about you?

It wasn't until I found a teacher who understood what real self defense training was and how to teach it in a way that I could put the lessons to use quickly and effectively that everything changed for me. And, the first thing that I learned from this man proved that he knew what he was talking about!

I knew because I had been attacked in school as a child.

I knew because I had been attacked on the job as a police officer, bodyguard, and undercover investigator.

I knew because I had something that you may have as well - real-world experience!

And my experience told me that my attacker and I wouldn't be bowing to each other before he took my head off! It also told me that no amount of techniques, tricks, or weapons was going to make up for a lack of attitude, knowledge, and ability. None!

Even if you don't have actual experience dealing with a real self defense attack on the street, you can still make sure that you get the best self defense training available. But remember: knowing how to truly defend yourself begins with you being absolutely clear about exactly what is and what is not self defense!

So, if you're looking for quick and easy - based on my experience and the situations that I've been in - good luck finding it. There are just too many variables and situations to cover for any single book, video, or 2-hour course to be able to make that claim.

If you're looking for options, strategies, and the skills that will cover the widest range of problems, and...

...you're willing to put in the necessary time, effort, and commitment - you just might have a chance!

Do you want to know how I do it? You can learn more about defending yourself with this strategy and others in this powerful self defense video course called, "The Science of Self-Defense."

Self Defense For Kids

If you are a parent with a child that attends school and is at the age to hang outside with friends, safety should be of the utmost importance to you. Someone can grab your child and be gone in a matter of seconds in the right situation. This means that just like you should practice fire safety, you should practice self defense techniques designed for kids.

You may need to be trained yourself so you could learn martial arts with your child which would be the perfect opportunity for some real quality time. Not only will you and your child learn the self defense skills that could save both of your lives, you will become more confident, healthier and you even get to spend some time with your child that does not involve sitting in front of the television set. It really is something you should consider.

You may also want to think about some type of self defense device that is suitable for use by children. There really are only two that come to mind: the Kubotan and the Personal Alarm.

A Kubotan is small metal, wood or plastic rod that is carried on a key chain. They can come in 2 main types: blunted and pointed. The blunted Kubotan is designed for optimal use on bony parts of the body such as the sternum, hands, elbows, shins, knees, jaw and cheeks just to name a few bony strike points. The pointed Kubotan is designed to do the most damage on fleshy parts of the body and is great for attacking the eyes, stomach, groin and throat of an attacker.

But bear in mind that one of the best things about the Kubotan is that it is very versatile and both types can be effective on all areas of the body so try not to over think it too much. Once you have one, teach your child how to use it to escape an attacker by jabbing and poking their attacker and then practice it so it feels more natural for them.

A Personal Alarm is perfect for even smaller children but it should be accompanied with some instructions on what you want your child to do after they utilize their Personal Alarm. The obvious instruction should be to try and run for help while screaming stranger. Between them yelling and the extremely loud personal alarm, they should be able to grab the attention of anyone within the area pretty easily.

Bear in mind though, that both of these items are meant for your child to use while they are not under your direct supervision. They may or may not be allowed within school grounds so do your due diligence and verify with the school.

When teaching self defense designed for kids to your children the goal is not to raise a paranoid child but instead to raise a well informed and prepared child. Bad things happen to kids every day and many could have been averted by using just a little prevention.

You can see exactly what a Kubotan and Personal Alarm looks like online and get even more information on how these inexpensive devices can be used to save the life of your child.
